Have you ever tried to make Bryan Ferry look deluded? I haven't. I bet you haven't either. Have many people? I wouldn't think so. But I think that may be what Ben Dowell in The Guardian is up to although I can't be sure. Damn reported speech!
It's in a news, about how he's got some paintings, not one's he's painted, but one's he's bought, and he's having an exhibition. The tricky passage is as follows:
The 64-year-old said he had collected his works over a long period but that his most intense phase of buying was during the 1980s, when he was at the height of his musical fame with the release of the hit 1985 album Boys and Girls. Now, you see the problem there. Who, when they saw the mention of Bryan Ferry at the start of this piece thought 'the guy that did that album Boys and Girls'? Nobody, except... Ben Dowell, Bryan himself?
For the vagaries of reported speech leave it unclear whether or not he himself stated that they was the height of his musical fame. I think it's very unlikely that he did. But it could look like he did!
I wondered if Ben Dowell knew that Bryan Ferry was in Roxy Music. I glanced over the article and there seemed to be no mention of them. But I glanced again and there was one mention in passing. Ferry studied fine art at Newcastle University and taught pottery at Holland Park school in London before starting his musical career with Roxy Music. Well, what other mention was necessary? After all, it's not like Roxy Music were ever successful. Not like the hit 1985 album Boys and Girls, at the height of his musical fame.
One might even speculate that Bryan was all 'arrgh, I have approval over this article, you've mentioned Roxy Music too much, take it away and do it again!' But that seems unlikely. Roxy Music are playing another concert in July.
Perhaps, if they are promoted as Bryan 'Boys And Girls' Ferry with Roxy Music, The Band He Was In Before The Height Of His Musical Fame With The Hit Album 'Boys And Girls', it will all become clear.
that's all from me for now
see you around
