It's the 50th anniversary of the M1! The BBC has pictures. But we know what motorways look like. There are, however, many questions that remain unanswered, and possibly even unasked, about motorways, but of course It Is What It Is is here to set things right.
Firstly motorways have lanes. Now motorways are, of course, intended to take loads of traffic long distances at high speed, so why do that have lanes? Lands are little windy things where you have to reverse into a lay-by to let a tractor past. Sure, motorways have several lanes, but that's not the point, is it? Why not have one big road and forget about lanes? It's common sense, isn't it, when you think about it. But they never asked me, just because I wasn't born yet. They should have waited.
Secondly, what's with this 'motor'? This is doubly biased. Only coc
Image via Wikipediakneys call cars 'motors', and I'm not even sure whether real ones do it or just television ones. Is this a classic case of muddled design by committee? Having settled upon lanes to appeal to the country folk, they then start with all this 'motor' rubbish to woo the television cockneys. It is, of course, also biased towards the car. Motorways carry significant amounts of other traffic that isn't cars. Think of all the lorries, trundling up and down the motorway with their cargos of logistics, making life better for everyone in the country by warming it up with all their emissions. It would take a lot longer for the country (the planet too, but that's not relevant to this) to warm up if it wasn't for them.
Thirdly they have hard shoulders. What's wrong with a bit of compassion? There's enough sadness and heartbreak in the world without mile upon mile of relentless hard shoulder. Better keep moving, no use crying on that, you'll only feel emptier than when you started.
Finally, you're not allowed to stop. That's no good. Sometimes you need to stop, don't you, or you'll crack up. So why don't they encourage that? It would be healthier.
If you have answers to any of these questions, as usual, you know what to do.
that's all from me for now
see you around
